What is NUPACE?

The Nagoya University Program for Academic Exchange (NUPACE), established in February 1996, is a short-term student exchange programme, through which international students are given the opportunity to studying Japan for to twelve months. It aims to forge friendships that extent beyond borders, internationalise through education, and motivate overseas students to pursue more extensive studies with regard to Japan.

Tell me about the academic programme

NUPACE offers a unique and flexible curriculum consisting of Japanese language instruction, Japan area studies and wide range of courses in the student’s major field of study. The medium of instruction is English. Provided that students meet the minimum requirement of ten credits peer semester, they are free to design their own curriculum, balancing their interest in the common academic program (Japanese language/Japan area studies) with their desire to pursue their ‘major’ or independent research. Moreover, students who are proficient in Japanese are eligible to register for any course offered to degree-seeking students at Nagoya University.

The academic year at Nagoya University is divided into two semesters: spring (April 1 ~ September 30) and autumn (October 1 ~ March 31). The NUPACE year runs from Late September to August of the following year, with classes finishing at the end of July. We offer students a choice of two admission periods: Late September or April, and students may choose to study for either one or two semesters.

Am I eligible?

Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at overseas universities that have concluded academic exchange agreements with Nagoya University are eligible to apply. Students must be sufficiently proficient in EITHER English (a TOEFL score of 530 <CBT=197>. TOEIC score of 670, or an IELTS overall bandscore of 5.5 is required of non-native speakers) Or Japanese Language Proficiency Test, level 1) to comprehend lectures write reports and sit examinations. Moreover, a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) or better on 4.0 a scale is required. Upon completion of the term of exchange, students must return to their home universities to resume their studies.

What about financial assistance?

The Association of International Education, Japan (AIEJ) offers short-term scholarships for which students enrolled at overseas universities that have concluded academic exchange agreements with Nagoya University are eligible to apply. The scholarship covers the round-trip airfare from the nearest airport to the student’s home institution, a one time settling-in allowance of ¥ 25,000, and a monthly stipend of ¥ 80,000. As a rule, students are expected to study at Nagoya University for four to twelve months (one or two semesters), although, exceptionally, students wishing to conduct research for a three-month period may be considered.

Nagoya University consists of nine undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate schools, two research institutes and twenty-one research centres. Approximately 16,500 students are enrolled at the university, over 1,200 of whom hail from overseas, and more than 3,400 faculty and administrative staff are engaged in teaching, research and university management.
